Occupancy Rate Calculator
Compare sold room-nights with available room-nights over the same period.
Default numbers are an example, not industry data.
Formula
Occupancy % = room-nights sold ÷ available room-nights × 100.
How it works
Occupancy is the share of available room-nights sold. Count one room for one night as one room-night. Available room-nights are the sum of rooms available each night, not just the number of physical rooms in the hotel.
Match sold and available counts to the same dates and apply a consistent policy for unavailable or out-of-order rooms. A result above 100% indicates inconsistent counts in this model. Compare occupancy with ADR and RevPAR; filling more rooms at lower rates may not improve revenue or profit.
Worked example
240 sold room-nights ÷ 300 available room-nights × 100 = 80.00% occupancy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate available room-nights?
For constant capacity, multiply available rooms per night by nights. If capacity varies, sum each night’s available rooms.
Does occupancy measure hotel profitability?
No. It measures capacity sold. Room rates, operating costs and other revenue determine financial performance.
Should I use guests or rooms sold?
Use room-nights sold. Multiple guests in one room do not create additional room-nights.
Are my inputs saved or uploaded?
Calculations run in your browser. Inputs are not uploaded by the calculator. Sharing puts the inputs in a readable URL; anyone with that link can see them.
