Tip-Out Calculator

Calculate each role independently using sales or tips as its basis.

Default numbers are an example, not industry data.

Formula

Role tip-out = chosen basis (sales or tips) × percentage ÷ 100. Server keeps = tips − total tip-outs.

How it works

Enter server sales and tips for one shift or other consistent period. Each role has its own basis: a percentage of sales uses sales, while a percentage of tips uses tips. The role payments are calculated independently, not sequentially from a shrinking balance.

Use the agreed sales definition, preferably net sales excluding VAT or sales tax, and check that it matches the policy. Tip-out rules and eligibility vary by country and state; check local law before applying an arrangement. Review the retained amount and flag any tip-out that exceeds tips received.

Worked example

3% of 1,000 sales is 30 for Bar; 10% of 200 tips is 20 for Support. Total tip-out is 50.00; server keeps 150.00.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3% of sales the same as 3% of tips?

No. At 1,000 sales and 200 tips, 3% of sales is 30 while 3% of tips is 6.

Are role percentages applied one after another?

No. Each row uses the original entered sales or tips. All row amounts are then added together.

What if the server keeps a negative amount?

The entered tip-outs exceed tips received. Review the policy and inputs, and check applicable law before making any payment or deduction.

Are my inputs saved or uploaded?

Calculations run in your browser. Inputs are not uploaded by the calculator. Sharing puts the inputs in a readable URL; anyone with that link can see them.
