Formula

Hours: tips × hours ÷ total hours. Points: tips × (hours × points) ÷ total weighted hours. Allocate cents by largest remainder.

How it works

Enter the distributable tip pool and each eligible person’s hours. Hours mode uses hours alone; points mode multiplies hours by the points you assign. Points are editable allocation weights, not a statement of legal eligibility or role entitlement.

Tip pooling rules vary by country and state. Check local law, including eligibility, manager participation and any wage or consent requirements before distributing tips. Use one shift or pay period consistently and reconcile the pool to actual tips; tax reporting is separate.

Shares are rounded to cents using the largest remainders so they sum to the entered pool. Review names, hours and weights before paying out, especially after adding or removing a row.

Worked example

By hours, two staff working 8 hours each split 100 into 50.00 each. By points, weights of 1 and 0.5 give 66.67 and 33.33.

Frequently asked questions

How do points affect a tip share?

In points mode, eight hours at two points has twice the weight of eight hours at one point. In hours mode, points are ignored.

Can managers join a tip pool?

Eligibility depends on applicable law and the person’s duties. The calculator does not determine legal eligibility; check local rules before including anyone.

Why do equal shares sometimes differ by one cent?

Some totals cannot divide evenly into cents. The largest-remainder allocation distributes leftover cents so the shares sum exactly to the pool.

Are my inputs saved or uploaded?

Calculations run in your browser. Inputs are not uploaded by the calculator. Sharing puts the inputs in a readable URL; anyone with that link can see them.
